Blueberry ‘Sunshine Blue’ – Vaccinium corymbosum x ashei x darrowi

APPEARANCE: Dwarf southern highbush variety, semi-deciduous (usually evergreen in mild climates) with purple-pink-white spring bell flowers before fruit set. Tolerates more alkaline soil than other varieties. Low chilling requirement of 150 hours, making it suitable for the subtropics. High yielding with big tangy berries.

USES: In the kitchen garden, in pots, as a low hedge and ornamental feature shrub.

PLANTING: Plant in a full sun to partly shaded location in free draining acid soil. For best results dig well composted manure through the soil prior to planting.If you don’t have acid soil blueberries will grow in a container of ericaeous compost (for azaleas). Usually self-fertile but crops better when planted alongside another variety
CARE: Apply a good layer of mulch after planting, this helps to keep the shallow root system cool and moist. Keep the plant well watered during spring and summer. Prune mid winter. Treat unwanted garden pests with organic eco-oil.
